Old Irish & Highland Dress, with Notes on That of the Isle of Man
H. F. McClintock
The first properly scholarly and comprehensive work ever done on the Gaelic, pre-modern dress of Ireland, the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, and the Isle of Man. McClintock's book is generally well-received research, though some aspects of the Scottish information have been surpassed by later works, especially J. Telfer Dunbar's History of Highland Dress.
Note: This book had an enlarged 2nd edition in 1950, in 2 vols. (the second titled Old Highland Dress and Tartans). This has since been reprinted in 1 vol. by On Military Matters (of Hoboken, New Jersey), OMM (in the UK somewhere), Dundalgan Press (Dundalk, Scotland), and Three Geese in Flight Celtic Press (Los Angeles), though all of these are now out-of-print too, and also scarce.
