Batavia: Mission Press, MDCCCXLII. — 148 p.With regard to the sounds of the Chinese language the student would do well to consult Morrison's Grammar, which contains a short treatise on the subject. In Marshman's Clavis Sinica, there is a long and too theoretical essay. An able paper on this topic appears in the IIIrd Vol. of the Chinese repository, No 1. Abel Remusat's Grammaire Chinoise, contains a lucid exposition of the system. Premare, in his Notitiae, is very short. The introduction to Kanghe's Dictionary, from whence most of the remarks of the above writers have been taken, is very full on the subject. For the Fokeen, in particular, see Medhurst's introductory remarks to his Dictionary of that dialect, and Dyer's system of intonation; while for the Canton dialect, the Chinese Chrestomathy may be consulted, which adds little to the general notices contained in the above works.
